Handled with care: Macon, Barford cut miscues in bench roles

FAYETTEVILLE -- Arkansas guards Daryl Macon and Jaylen Barford came off the bench on Monday night after struggling as starters in the Hogs' first four games.

Coach Mike Anderson got the response he was looking for.

Macon had 15 points and Barford 13 to help the Razorbacks (4-1) beat Mount St. Mary's 89-76 on Monday night in Walton Arena.

Macon had 11 assists and 10 turnovers the first four games and Barford had 10 and 12.

Anderson decided to replace Macon and Barford in the starting lineup with junior Anton Beard and senior Manny Watkins, who had combined for 21 assists and 3 turnovers.

Macon and Barford took better care of the ball. Macon had one turnover in 18 minutes and Barford didn't have any turnovers in 23 minutes.

Arkansas junior forward Dustin Thomas, a transfer from Colorado, had a season-high 13 points.

Senior guard Dusty Hannahs scored 12 points for the Razorbacks.

Beard had 11 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists and senior center Moses Kingsley had 9 points and 13 rebounds.

Sophomore guard Elijah Long led the Mountaineers with 24 points.

Mount St. Mary's (1-7) was playing its eighth consecutive road game to start the season, including fourth against a Power 5 conference team. The Mountaineers also have lost at West Virginia, Iowa State, Minnesota, Michigan, Southern Illinois and Texas-Arlington while winning at George Mason.

Mount St. Mary's pulled within 59-53 on Mawdo Sallah's layup with 12:02 left.

The Razorbacks outscored the Moutaineers 11-0 over a 3:09 span, including five points by Macon, to move ahead 70-53 with 8:37 left.

The Mountaineers didn't get closer than 14 points the rest of the game.

Macon scored on a layup with 28 seconds left in the first half to give the Razorbacks a 45-37 halftime lead.

Mount St. Mary's jumped out to 4-0 lead on baskets by Sallah and Chris Wray as the Razorbacks committed turnovers on their first two possessions.

Thomas hit a three-point basket -- his first attempt from beyond the arc this season -- to put the Razorbacks ahead 5-4.

Bill Miller's three-point basket gave the Mountaineers a 7-5 lead.

Arkansas outscored Mount St. Mary's 9-0 over a 3:06 span, including two baskets by Barford and Macon's three-pointer, to move ahead 16-7 with 12:06 left in the half.

Mount St. Mary's pulled within 18-14 on Greg Alexander's layup.

A three-point basket by C.J. Jones pushed the Razorbacks' lead to 24-16.

Sallah's tip-in cut the Mountaineers' deficit to 26-20.

Arkansas went up 31-20 on Hannahs' driving basket.

Long's three-point play on a layup and free throw made pulled the Mountaineers within 37-31 with 3:33 left in the half.

Back-to-back three-pointers by Barford and Beard put the Razorbacks ahead 43-31.

Long's jump shot made it 43-37 with 48 seconds left before halftime.

The Razorbacks play Stephen F. Austin at 8 p.m. Thursday. The game will be televised by the SEC Network.
