Alliance hosts forestry workshop

The Beaver Watershed Alliance will host a forest management workshop from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday in Elkins.

This workshop will provide a general overview of forest management techniques for landowners to achieve improved wildlife habitat, forest health and management planning.

Prescribed burns, which can help prevent timber loss from disease, reduce understory brush and control invasive plants, will be discussed.

Experts from the Natural Resources Conservation Service, Arkansas Game and Fish Commission and Devereux and Associates will speak about practices such as management plans, financial assistance, timber sales, contract considerations for harvesting and management for wildlife and recreation.

"Many landowners that we work with have reported diseased timber and a desire to have a healthy forest," said John Pennington of Beaver Watershed Alliance. "Healthy forests are one key element of maintaining long term, high quality water in Beaver Lake, but provide many more benefits for landowners and others."

Landowners with any size forest can benefit from this workshop.

The workshop will be at the Elkins Community Center, 162 Doolin Drive. It is free and snacks will be provided. Those interested in attending should register with Melissa Welch, 479-750-8007 or [email protected].
