WHO'S WHO IN PHILANTHROPY

Raising a festive salute

Luncheon serves up praise, awards for those dedicated to aiding others

The 2016 National Philanthropy Day Luncheon, held Nov. 17 at the Embassy Suites Little Rock, was a literal "Who's Who" in fundraising in Arkansas, specifically central Arkansas. Besides the eight award recipients, attendees included a slew of past and potential honorees. The event was put on by the Arkansas chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals.

It was difficult to settle a crowd that specializes in communication and camaraderie to make a living, but by the time KTHV's Craig O'Neill was into his second joke, he had their attention.

"With so many past honorees, this isn't a luncheon -- this is a reunion," O'Neill quipped.

Matt Cleveland, president of the association's state chapter, welcomed guests and gave out the awards.

"Philanthropy is designed as the love of humankind," Cleveland said.

Rick Fleetwood of Snell Prosthetic and Orthotic Laboratory (underwriting sponsor for the event) was named Outstanding Philanthropist; Van Tilbury of East Harding Construction was Outstanding Volunteer Fundraiser; and Centers for Youth & Families Emerging Leaders, represented by Greg McCarroll, was the Outstanding Volunteer Organization.

BHP Billiton, represented by Chris Barnesby, was Outstanding Corporation; Shannon Fleming with the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences' Reynolds Institute on Aging was the Outstanding Fundraising Professional; and The Home Depot, represented by April Ostie, was Outstanding Foundation.

The President's Award went to ArkansasGives, an initiative of the Arkansas Community Foundation, represented by Heather Larkin. ArkansasGives, a one-day fundraising blitz for nonprofits big and small, raked in about $7.5 million in 2014 and 2015, she said. The event is so big that the foundation moves its office to the AT&T corporate office in Little Rock for technology help in taking donations. The company also sponsors a watch party to share the excitement as donation totals roll in.

The power of giving was perhaps best portrayed by Paul Gardner, who received the first Lifetime Achievement Award. Gardner -- adorned with so many ribbons that friends kiddingly called him "The General" -- came up with the National Philanthropy Day awards.
