• Burglars, believed to have been the same ones who have operated in several Little Rock residence districts recently, secured jewelry and clothing valued at $1,500 from the residence of Noel Loeb, 807 West Third street, some time before 10:15 o'clock last night, while members of the family were absent. The burglars forced an entrance through a west window on the ground floor, evidently with a "jimmy."

• Dragging and diving operations began early today for the body of Pulaski County Judge-elect Tom Gulley, 65, whose station wagon plunged off the St. Charles Ferry into the White River about 6 p.m. Thursday. Gulley and a companion from Little Rock, John E. Eberle, 64, 2505 N. University, were on the way to the White River National Wildlife Refuge to hunt deer. Eberle jumped out of the station wagon before it ran off the ferry.

• Thanksgiving is near and Arkansans are working to help the needy, but as recently as 1987, the state treated the homeless almost as if they didn't exist. And though the state Department of Human Services has made changes to accommodate homeless Arkansans since 1988, some cases still fall through the cracks, Thomas Green, assistant deputy director, said. Green concedes that his department was ill-equipped to deal with the homeless in the late 1980s. He said that before 1988, homeless people couldn't obtain housing assistance, food stamps or other help. An address was needed to mail out applications and to verify the applicant's statements.

• Flip through the growing stack of comments on three proposals to mine along Crooked Creek at the state Department of Environmental Quality's Mining Division and a trend quickly emerges. Most of those who felt compelled to write about the permit proposals -- which the state has tentatively denied -- oppose streambed gravel mining of the creek. Similar proposals in the past drew the same sort of response, said James Stephens, chief of the department's surface mining and reclamation division. "There's usually one or two that are in support," Stephens said of in-stream mining permit proposals. "The vast majority are against. I wouldn't say it's 100 to 1, but it's probably 30 to 40 to 1."
