Mariners land Segura

The Seattle Mariners finally landed the established shortstop they've long been trying to find. To do it, they had to part with a talented young pitcher who still has the potential to blossom. Seattle and Arizona pulled off a five-player trade Wednesday night, with the Mariners acquiring speedy infielder Jean Segura and the Diamondbacks getting right-hander Taijuan Walker as the centerpieces of the deal. Segura immediately projects as Seattle's leadoff hitter and starting shortstop, solidifying an infield that already includes Kyle Seager at third base and Robinson Cano at second. But getting Segura meant the Mariners had to give up on the inconsistent Walker, a power arm who has showed occasional flashes of brilliance. Arizona also obtained shortstop Ketel Marte, while Seattle received outfielder Mitch Haniger and left-hander Zac Curtis. The addition of Walker could help a dreadful Arizona pitching staff that posted a 5.09 ERA last season, tied with Minnesota for worst in the majors. He joins a rotation that includes ace Zack Greinke, Shelby Miller, Patrick Corbin and Archie Bradley. The Diamondbacks finished 69-93 last season, fourth in the NL West.

'Boo' Ferriss dies

David "Boo" Ferriss, a Boston Red Sox pitcher who helped lead the team to the 1946 World Series, has died. He was 94. Rick Cleveland, a close friend of the former player, said Ferriss died Thursday at his home in Cleveland, Miss., surrounded by family. Cleveland said Ferriss had been in declining health for several weeks. Ferriss pitched six years for the Red Sox from 1945-50. He had his best season in 1946, when he finished with a 25-6 record and a 3.25 ERA and was named an American League All-Star. The Shaw, Miss., native's career was shortened by a shoulder injury in 1947, but he finished with a 65-30 career record. Ferriss was later the baseball coach at Delta State University in Cleveland, Miss., where he won 639 games over 26 seasons.

Spain leads by 1

Spain's Rafa Cabrera-Bello was the only player to give thanks to the stiff southwesterly wind that buffeted the field in the World Cup's opening round Thursday in Melbourne, Australia. He threw back his head in a mix of relief and delight when a birdie attempt on the 18th green hovered on the right lip and then dropped into the cup to propel his team into the lead. Cabrera-Bello and teammate Jon Rahm had a 3-under 69 to edge one stroke ahead of France, China and the U.S. after the foursomes competition at Kingston Heath. A cold wind troubled the 56 players with club selection on approach shots to the quickening greens. The teams are hoping for calmer conditions for today's fourball second round that is more tournament-familiar than the first round's alternate shot format. While U.S. pair Rickie Fowler and Jimmy Walker are away from home for Thanksgiving, winning the World Cup was firmly on their minds. "We didn't come down here to play for second," Fowler said. Walker dominated the American highlights package, nailing a 15-meter birdie putt on the fifth and then holing a bunker shot at the 13th that started a trio of back nine birdies as the pair compiled a 2-under 70. The Americans upstaged host team Australia as Adam Scott and Marc Leishman salvaged only one birdie, at the par-three 15th, from a tardy round to be back in the pack after a 74. Only six of the 28 teams managed to break par around the 6,503-meter (7,111-yard) course, with France's Victor Dubuisson and Romain Langasque posting what seemed to be an unreachable 70 in the second group out in more benign morning conditions.

Heaven's Runway rallied past odds-on favorite Stallwalkin' Dude for a 32-1 upset Thursday in the $200,000 Fall Highweight Handicap at Aqueduct. The 6-year-old trained by Rudy Rodriguez and ridden by Junior Alvarado surged in deep stretch for a neck victory over the 4-5 choice. Heaven's Runway got his first victory in nine starts this season, his sixth in 41 races overall. The time was 1:10.19 for the six furlongs. Heaven's Runway paid $66.50, $16.20 and $9.30. Toews questionable

Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews exited a 2-1 loss Wednesday night to the Sharks after suffering an upper-body injury in the second period. Fortunately for the Hawks, they appear to have dodged a major setback to their season. Toews' injury is not serious, although he is questionable for today's game against the Ducks, according to Coach Joel Quenneville. Toews' status could be considered "day to day," Quenneville said, but the Hawks may have to get by in the short term without him. His injury doesn't come at the best time for the Hawks, who have lost their last two and three of five on the circus trip. Toews did not practice on Thursday in Los Angeles, though he was with the team as they left the Toyota Sports Center and showed no appearance of injury.

Love sets record

Cleveland Cavaliers forward Kevin Love set an NBA record for points in a first quarter by scoring 34 on Wednesday against Portland. Love fell three points shy of the league record for points in any quarter, set by Golden State's Klay Thompson, who scored 37 in the third on Jan. 23, 2015. Love, who set a team record for points in a period, made 11 of 14 field goal attempts, including 8 of 10 on three-pointers. He made his first six shots, including five three-pointers. He missed his only shot of the second quarter, playing about the final 6 minutes of the period. The Cavaliers led 81-60 at halftime. Love scored a career-high 51 points while playing for Minnesota on March 23, 2012. His season high in points was 27.
