All aboard for a trip back to some of yesterday's trips back:
• Time After Time (1979): North Little Rock native Mary Steenburgen makes time with time-traveler H.G. Wells (Malcolm McDowell) in up-to-date San Francisco. They're out to catch a time-hopping Jack the Ripper (David Warner) and clean his clock.
• The Time Tunnel (1966-67): This TV series sent the singing heart-throb James Darren and Robert Colbert back in time to meet such notables as Robin Hood and Billy the Kid. They "tumble helplessly," as the narrator intoned, "toward a new fantastic adventure somewhere along the infinite corridors of time."
Their time gizmo was a tube that pea-shot them through the ages, thanks to a spiral much like the hypnotic pattern that marked the opening of The Twilight Zone (1959-64).
Rod Serling's twilit fantasy series also clocked in several episodes about time travel, including "The Odyssey of Flight 33." A jetliner flies back to the time of dinosaurs.
• Mr. Peabody & Sherman (1959-64): The brainy cartoon dog and his adopted boy, Sherman, drop in on King Arthur and Buffalo Bill by means of Peabody's invention, the WABAC or Wayback Machine.
They were part of The Bullwinkle Show, and their association with Bullwinkle J. Moose and Rocky the Flying Squirrel guaranteed a bad pun at the end of each timeless adventure.
"You know what they say," as the dog summed up a visit to ancient Greece. "'If at first you don't succeed, Troy, Troy again.'"
