Road near Walcott to get new bridge

Replacing a bridge will require closing a section of Arkansas 141 south of Walcott in Greene County on Tuesday, the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department said.

Traffic also will be detoured beginning at 7 a.m. for the removal of a 30-foot bridge and the installation of five 60-inch diameter metal culverts about a half-mile north of Arkansas 358 and Arkansas 141 and 3.5 miles south of Walcott. Once the culverts are installed, asphalt will be spread over the top of them.

Because of the amount of work involved, the section may be closed an additional day, the department said.

During the closure, motorists will be detoured to a route around the closed section that uses Greene County Road 755, Greene County Road 708 and Arkansas 358.

The detour won't be available for use by heavy trucks, which are asked to use alternative routes, the department said. Local residents will be able to enter the work zone.

The bridge being replaced, built in 1950, is a wooden structure with a concrete driving surface, an agency spokesman said. The wood structure is failing, he said. The highway is part of the Crowley's Ridge National Scenic Byway.
