UAMS recognizes Washington Regional

The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences recently recognized Washington Regional as an official Community Partner for its collaboration with the Office of Community Health and Research at the UAMS Northwest campus in Fayetteville.

Washington Regional was honored for its efforts to educate health care providers and staff members on culturally competent care for Marshallese and Hispanic patients. Washington Regional's employee education team hosted multiple classes and training sessions with UAMS to educate more than 130 staff members. Washington Regional also collaborated with UAMS to ensure that Marshallese-speaking staff members received proper training in medical interpretation and to make health information and other materials available in Marshallese and Spanish.

The UAMS Community Partner Awards are sponsored by the Translational Research Institute at UAMS and are presented annually to community organizations, hospitals and businesses around the state that work with UAMS to address health disparities and improve community health.

Decatur wastewater plant earns award

The Decatur wastewater treatment plant received the Special System Recognition Award for wastewater systems serving less than 5,000 people during the annual Arkansas Water Works & Water Environment Association's annual conference held in Hot Springs.

The Decatur plant addressed a number of challenges in recent years, including the startup of the 2.2 million-gallons-per-day system in 2009. The plant had to meet some of the toughest permit limits in the state to that date and a faster-than-normal growth on the influent flow. It also put a new treatment process online, and the plant began accepting wastewater flow from the city of Centerton last year.
