Elm Springs Cemetery

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. May 29 at Elm Springs Cemetery.

Pastor Glen Trusty of Elm Springs Assembly of God Church will lead the service.

Mount Comfort Cemetery

Mount Comfort Cemetery Association members will be present at the cemetery from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 29 to accept tax deductible donations to help pay the yearly maintenance cost, which is running over $10,000 annually.

Donations can also be mailed to Mount Comfort Cemetery Association, 3878 W. Mount Comfort Road, Fayetteville, AR 72704. Make checks payable to the Mount Comfort Cemetery Association.

Winners named in art contest

Six pieces of student artwork conveying messages about keeping Arkansas clean and green have been chosen as winners in the Great American Cleanup in Arkansas youth poster contest promoted by the Keep Arkansas Beautiful commission. A panel of judges chose the winning posters. Winners received Walmart gift cards of varying value.

Kindergarten to second grades: Kinley Jeffcoat, second-grader at City Heights Elementary School, Van Buren, third place.

Third to fifth grades: Verona Friday, fifth-grader at Owl Creek School, Fayetteville, first place; Ana Castaneda, fourth-grader at King Elementary School, Van Buren, second place; Hannah Nichols, third-grader at Bernice Young Elementary School, Springdale, third place; Diego Arnold, fifth-grader at King Elementary School, Van Buren, honorable mention; “Max” Yu Liu, fourth-grader at Leverett Elementary School, Fayetteville, honorable mention.

The Youth Poster Contest is part of the 2016 Great American Cleanup in Arkansas campaign, the spring statewide community cleanup effort promoted annually by KAB, a certified state affiliate of Keep America Beautiful.

Hamilton attains Eagle Scout

Liam T. Hamilton, 17, of Bentonville has attained the rank of Eagle Scout. He is a member of Troop 450 in Bentonville. He is the son of Kathie and Peter Hamilton.

Hamilton’s Eagle Scout project involved coordinating 15 scouts and parents in cleaning and restoring gravestones and planting flowers and shrubs Oct. 31 at the Maxwell and Mount Eden Cemetery in Bentonville. The cemetery dates back to 1895, with most of the gravestones from the early 20th century and covered in lichen, making them unreadable. His project also included researching what chemicals are safe for the stone.

Beatty to compete for scholarship

Jaiden Beatty, a fifth-grade student at McNair Middle School in Fayetteville, competes this summer for the national title of USA National Preteen, prizes and college scholarships.

Beatty is the reigning USA National Miss Arkansas Preteen. She will compete in evening gown, interview and a runway fashion show from July 11-16 in the Boca Resort & Beach Club

Her community involvement includes making Valentine’s Day and Easter cards for residents of long-term care facilities, helping raise money for Arkansas Children’s Hospital, collecting donations for Peace at Home Women’s Shelter, organizing a canned food drive for the Northwest Arkansas Food Pantry, collecting toys for foster children, reading to elementary school children and collecting donations for the Washington County Animal Shelter. Her platform is “One Good Deed at a Time,” emphasizing that everyone can make a difference by doing one good deed no matter how large or small. Her hobbies include dancing and singing. She is a member of the competitive dance company of Pride of Arkansas in Fayetteville. Her parents are Jessica and Bruce Beatty of Fayetteville.

Alsup honored

Deborah Alsup of Gravette was recently named as a 2016 distinguished alumna of South Plains College in Levelland, Texas. She was honored during a special reception and the college’s employee recognition banquet.

Alsup currently works for Paris Presents as a senior director of sales, beauty products, to Wal-Mart Stores.

She was named 2015 Leading Women of Business by Arkansas Celebrate Magazine; featured in the 2004 Schering Plough annual report in an article representing the consumer health division; named top salesperson in 2002 by Wal-Mart at the Department 40 Supplier Summit; honored as the 2000 President’s Club Winner for outstanding sales performance at Atlantis, Bahamas; and the 1999 President’s Club Winner for outstanding sales performance at Maui, Hawaii.

Alsup and her husband, Danny, own and operate Clear Creek Cattle Co. in Gravette. Her family was named the Benton County farm family of the year in 1999.

Rechtin attains Eagle Scout

Michael Rechtin, 17, of Fayetteville has attained the rank of Eagle Scout. He is the son of Dr. Tammy and Mark Rechtin, and a member of Troop 116 at Sequoyah Methodist Church in Fayetteville.

For his Eagle Scout project, Rechtin designed and built an outdoor worship area on the grounds of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Fayetteville. The worship area consists of seven cedar benches and a 6-foot cross built from cedar boards hand milled from a local cedar tree that fallen in the ice storm.
