Honeycutt's outing 'good' in victory

Logan Honeycutt knows that change is coming in his baseball future. But for now he is making the most of the present.

Honeycutt, a recent Ouachita High School graduate and the MVP of the 2015 Class 2A state tournament, had fun Tuesday night at the Central Arkansas All-Star game at Gary Hogan Field in Little Rock.

He started, worked three shutout innings on the mound and also added a pair of hits as the South posted an 8-3 victory over an error-prone North team.

"I was just hoping to have some good at-bats and have a good outing on the mound,'' said Honeycutt, who has signed to play at Ouachita Baptist University. "I was mostly looking forward to seeing all my friends I have I have been playing with all these years."

Honeycutt only had a little trouble with Greenbrier's Cody McKnight, who singled up the middle in the first and had a bunt single in the third. Honeycutt finished with four strikeouts and a walk.

"I gave up the hits and walked a guy and I wished I hadn't done that, but I did all right,'' Honeycutt said.

Offensively, Honeycutt had two singles, scored twice and added a pair of stolen bases.

"Right now, Ouachita is looking at me as a two-way player,'' Honeycutt said. "They might make me decide at some point. I really like pitching because I like to strike out people."

The South scored four runs in the first inning. Little Rock Catholic's Joe Myers led off with a double and scored on a fielder's choice by Poyen's Lathan Wylie. Catholic's Lance Harville-Thomas tripled high off the left-center wall for the second run. The first of five North errors produced the third run and Watson Chapel's Blake Phillips drove in the fourth.

The North broke through against Poyen's Blaine Norman with three runs in the seventh. After consecutive strikeouts to open the inning, Benton Harmony Grove's Cody Eicenhower and Brinson Cornwell followed with singles and scored on hits by Malvern's Trace Collie and Jacksonville's Mike Havard.
