THE FLIP SIDE

Students pen stories from trail, lake and campsite

Hats off today to the sixth-grade students at Lingle Middle School in Rogers who took part in the 19th annual Lingle Outdoor School at Prairie Creek park on Beaver Lake.

Students got to pick from a variety of outdoor oriented classes including a class on outdoor writing. Part of the lesson had the students write their own stories from an experience they've had outdoors. Here is a selection of their work.

Jump in the lake

MARCUS MEIS

Once I went swimming because my family rented a pontoon boat. We drove around until we found a spot where there were no people and dropped the anchor.

Then we double-checked our life vests and jumped in. We swam for half an hour and then we went to shore and found a rock that was five feet out of the water. We did that while my dad cooked hot dogs on his camping grill.

Trail riding

PAIGE LASTOVICA

One summer I got to ride my horse with my cousins. It was really fun and my horse, Lilly, was really good.

We went on a trail ride around my farm. Riding through the woods was awesome. It was especially fun to me because I love horses. Horse riding is one of my hobbies.

My horse didn't get spooked on the trail ride. We all had a great time and we had so much fun.

Thoughts about sand

OLIVIA EVANS

Sand can be soothing.

Sandy beaches and warm sun.

Sand is all around us.

Camping time

ASHTON HOOGERHYDE

Last month I went camping with my dad. It was fun. He taught me a lot of things like how to make food, knots and how to put up a tent.

My dad is my hero! I can't wait to see him again. We fished at a lake in Texas. We also went boating.

Hawksbill Crag

GRACE BENISH

I felt like I was on top of the world, above the trees like a bird. I felt as if I could take flight and soar.

The hike to Hawksbill Crag was a bit difficult, but the waterfalls on the way kept me going with a great mood. Lush foliage all around me made me feel as if I was in a different world, free of cement and people glued to their phones.

When I made it to the beautiful cliff overhang, I ran to it, careful not to fall. I felt like I could do anything, touch the clouds and fly away from the cruel cement world I was once in.

On top of the mountain I could see everything. Not the whole world, but what I needed to see, nature in its fullest. My trip to Hawksbill Crag will be one I will always remember.

Fly fishing rules

JOVANNY SANDOVAL

Fly fishing is a great activity to do with your family. When it comes to actually wanting to catch fish and keep them, you will have to know the recent fishing rules and what bait to use.

What bait you use depends on what fish you will most likely catch. With that, if you catch a fish and want to keep it, it will have to be a certain length. Most fish will have to be around 10-15 inches.

Riding the trails

SOPHIE STEVENS

The Lake Atalanta renovation project has brought some magnificent new biking trails to Rogers. The trails are mostly in the woods and are mountain bike trails.

There are at least five trails, such as The Dump. They lead all the way from downtown to Lake Atalanta. There is even one all the way around the lake.

The trails and renovation have brought new light to downtown Rogers. Rogers continues to improve each year and bring families and friends together.
