On Christianity

DEAR REV. GRAHAM: Do you think computers will take over the world someday? I got a smartphone for Christmas, and I'm really amazed at all the things it can do. But it also makes me worry about what the world will be like 30 or 40 years from now.

-- B.T.G.

DEAR B.T.G.: God alone knows the future; we can only make guesses about it -- and they'll probably turn out to be wrong! The writer of Ecclesiastes in the Old Testament declared, "Since no one knows the future, who can tell someone else what is to come?" (Ecclesiastes 8:7).

It is, however, interesting to speculate about the future, and especially to think about the role computers might play in it. And you are wise to be concerned -- but not because computers are evil or are destined to take over the world. The real problem is the same as any other human invention: In the hands of evil men, a computer can become an evil tool. Even today we have to worry about issues like hacking and computer security.

This is why we need Christ, for only He can give us the moral and spiritual wisdom we need to use our knowledge wisely. What if the world 30 or 40 years from now has no sense of right and wrong? What if we toss aside any commitment to moral truth? It could happen if we turn our backs on Christ -- and it would be disastrous.

At the same time, don't spend your time worrying about the future; it's in God's hands. Instead, make sure of your commitment to Jesus Christ, and then ask God to help you make an impact on others for His sake. The Bible says, "I know the plans I have for you ... plans to give you hope and a future" (Jeremiah 29:11).
