Arkansas' unemployment rate fell to 3.9 percent in April, the lowest it's been for as far back as records go, the Arkansas Department of Workforce Services said Friday.

The agency said the figure reflected 5,309 more employed and 2,449 fewer unemployed Arkansans than the month before, when the rate stood at 4.1 percent.

Total number of employed people in Arkansas reached 1,309,268, which surpassed a record previously set in May 2008, according to a statement from the department.

State records go back as far as 1957. The unemployment rate has never been as low as 3.9 percent in that span.

Jobs were added in several sectors, including trade, transportation, and utilities; leisure and hospitality; professional and business services; and construction.

The national unemployment rate in April was 5 percent.

The state workforce agency had initially reported March unemployment to be 4 percent. It said Friday that the figure was revised upward later to 4.1 percent.
