Outside the Lines an eclectic mix of music, fun

Outside the Lines is a jazz/gypsy jazz/newgrass/folk trio. But guitar player Ed Nicholson says if an audience doesn't have fun at a show, "we're not doing it right. That's why we do it."

Nicholson, mandolin player Stan D'Aubin and bass player Emily Kaitz will perform at 7 p.m. today (May 19) at the Artist Retreat Center in Bella Vista. It's a relatively new music venue, set in the acoustic beauty of the historic Linebarger cabin, and an opportunity for the group to reach a new audience.

Those potential differences have been on the musicians' minds. They've even resurrected a Kaitz song from the Northwest Arkansas-made film "Frog Hair" to suit potential listeners. It's titled "Golf Club Swing."

Other songs reflect the musicians' own lives, among them "What Did I Forget," a Django-influenced tune written by Nicholson with lyrics by Kaitz and performed by D'Aubin.

"It's got a humorous bent on the tendency of people in our demographic to occasionally forget things," Nicholson says. "And Stan sings it with a cheesy phony French accent."

Another Kaitz song on the playlist is titled "Banjo Players in Heaven," and "the hook line," Nicholson says, is "it's hard to find a banjo player in heaven because there's some things even Jesus won't forgive."

"We've all been writing," Nicholson says. "The show will be a pretty eclectic mix of original material, jazz standards and gypsy jazz/swing, plus bluegrass/newgrass.

"It will be fun." He promises.
