LETTUCE DINE

Visitors sample art exhibit at St. Joseph Center dinner

Artists Kevin Kresse, Steven Rockwell, Jennifer Wilson and Jeff Waddle made their way down from their third-story studios at St. Joseph Center of Arkansas Inc. in North Little Rock to mingle with guests May 5 attending the center's Lettuce Dine Dinner & Art Show.

The affair netted about $10,000 to preserve and restore the historic St. Joseph Center -- a former orphanage -- said the center's board chairman Sandy DeCoursey. It takes roughly $110,000 to keep the place going every year.

Guests perused the second-floor hall, cocktails in hand, while taking in works by the artists in residence and others. About 75 people attended.

The farm-to-table dinner, held on the lawn at dusk, featured fare prepared by chef Jonathan Arrington of the Root Cafe. The main course was braised pork belly with cornbread pudding, kohlrabi-tortilla slaw, and three-chile tamarind barbecue. The protein was provided by Grass Roots Farmers Co-op of Marshall.

The event pre-empted a festival at the nonprofit St. Joseph Center on May 7. In addition to the art show, food trucks, children's activities, music and hayrides were added.
