Fayetteville promotions chief to resign

FAYETTEVILLE -- Kym Hughes, executive director of the Fayetteville Advertising and Promotion Commission, has submitted her resignation effective July 1, citing personal reasons.

"At this time, I must turn my attention to my family and move closer to be near to them," Hughes said in a statement released Monday. She accepted the job in Fayetteville in 2014 and moved to Fayetteville from Georgia.

"I'm very proud of what she's been able to do," said Matthew Petty, chairman of the commission and a member of the city council. "For example, we increased our advertising budget by $300,000 while she was here, and I'm very pleased with the results, particularly the expansion into more digital advertising."

Tentative plans are to name an interim director in June and begin a search for a replacement after Hughes leaves, but those plans are subject to commission approval, Petty said.

The commission pays for tourism-related projects, financed primarily by an advertising and promotion tax on hotels and restaurants. The commission has an annual budget of about $5.1 million.

"I am proud of the achievements we have made to bring our city to a new level of national recognition," Hughes said in her statement. "During my tenure, Fayetteville has been named in the top three places to live by U.S. News & World Report and received many other accolades. My team works tirelessly to promote our great city. However, the credit is not ours; the city itself makes our job easy. Fayetteville is a great place to be a tourist as well as a resident."
