Baseball: Bratspies leads the way for Tigers

BENTONVILLE -- A catcher normally isn't the player asked to fill the leadoff hitter's position in a baseball lineup.

Bentonville baseball coach Todd Abbott, however, felt some changes were necessary after his team had been held to two hits in a loss to Fort Smith Southside earlier this season. That's when he asked Matt Bratspies, who was batting third in the order at the time, to take over that spot, and the senior welcomed the challenge.

"I always know that whenever I get on base, I get a courtesy runner," Bratspies said. "We have great runners that come in for me, so I know if I get on base we get some speed on the bags.

"That was the first thought that ran through my mind, and I was actually ready for it. I almost expected to get moved up to either the two- or the one-hole. I like it, and I'm still there, so it was a good decision."

Bratspies continued to pound the ball in his new role. He finished the regular season with a team-high .436 batting average -- good enough for second among 7A-West Conference hitters -- and led the offensive charge for Bentonville, which won 11 of its last 13 games to clinch the league title and a top seed for the Class 7A state tournament, which starts today in North Little Rock.

Meanwhile, he continued to do quality defensive work behind the plate. He handled almost all of the Tigers' catching duties for the pitching duo of Kasey Ford and Drew Young and made opposing baserunners hesitant about stealing bases when they did reach base.

"We had talked about moving Matt to leadoff for about a couple of weeks before we did it," Abbott said. "He had swung the bat so great, so we talked about moving our best hitter up there so he could get more at-bats.

"It was probably the most significant move for us, and it made great dividends. He's been great all year long -- solid, steady. He's a mature kid, and he hadn't changed a thing. He's had the same approach at the plate and quality at-bats all year long."

The only thing Bratspies did differently after the change was make opposing pitchers work a little harder. The Tigers' coaches wanted him to cut down on swinging at first pitches, which Bratspies admitted was a struggle at times.

That didn't mean he had to lay off all those pitches, especially if he found one that was too tempting to resist.

"Coach Y (Curt Yarrington) came up to me and told me I was put up there for a reason," Bratspies said. "If I get a first-pitch fastball into my wheelhouse, I should take a hack at it.

"I'm still trying to hit the ball up the middle like we always practice, and I'm hitting line-drives and ground balls."
