CONWAY -- Zach McWhorter already had one pole vault record in his possession, but he wanted a little more Thursday afternoon.

Springdale Har-Ber's Matthew Wentz, left, and teammate Deondrick Hinton race in the 300 hurdles during the Class 7A State Track and Field Championship Thursday in Conway.

A little premature celebration, however, may have cost the Springdale Har-Ber junior the Class 7A state record at McConnell Stadium. McWhorter jumped and bounced on the mat when he thought he had cleared 17 feet, 1.25 inches to break the state overall mark, and that may have caused the bar to fall from the standards.

Instead, he had to settle for the Class 7A state record of 16-9, which came on his third try as he battled the wind and the occasional long jumper who crossed into his path.

"I came in pretty early and cleared some bars," McWhorter said. "The high jump competition was still going on, and we were going back and forth. That was a little obstacle to get past.

"Once they ended, it turned to the wind. Every single time I was up, it seemed to turn into a headwind. I'm happy I got the 7A record, but 17-1¼ ... it was frustrating to clear it, then jumping on the pit made it (the bar) fall down."

Meanwhile, it was Fayetteville's day to sweep both team titles, although both teams had to hold off late charges with their distance runners. The Bulldogs won the boys title by a 132.5-115 margin over runner-up Springdale Har-Ber.

Fayetteville built a big lead by winning early events. August Carlson took top honors in the high jump with a personal-best 6 feet, 7 inches, as did Blake Young in the shot put (52-11.5), Caleb Cooper in the triple jump (45-7.5) and its 4x800-meter relay team with a time of 8 minutes, 2.57 seconds.

Har-Ber, however, made a charge and had Fayetteville's lead whittled to a 108.5-105 margin with two events. That's when the Purple'Dogs sealed the title as Collin Pilkington and Camren Fischer turned in a one-two finish in the 3,200.

"You look at what we did throughout the day in the jumps, the throws and the distance events," Fayetteville coach Drew Yoakum said. "It was just incredible, and it's a whole team effort.

"We had our chances in a lot of things, and the kids knew we might not be as strong in the 100 and 200. Har-Ber had a lot in the sprints and we knew it was going to be close. The distance guys stepped up big."

Fayetteville's girls ended Bentonville's reign of four consecutive state titles as the Lady Purple'Dogs scored 127 points to the Lady Tigers' 112.

Lauren Holmes led the way with first-place finishes in the triple jump (36-8) and the 100 hurdles (15.18 seconds), while Jasmine Franklin won the shot put (42-11) and Rebecca Boushelle took the 1,600 (5:08.75). Fayetteville used depth to pile up points and get enough cushion before Bentonville threw a number of runners in the 800 and 3,200 to catch up.

"You start counting up and in the 3,200, the top 11 runners were either from Bentonville or Fayetteville," Yoakum said. "We knew that was going to be a challenge, and we had to have a lead.

"Becca Boushelle came through and did an unbelievable job in the distance. Corrie Purcell stepped it up in the 1,600 and the 3,200, and even the 4x800 relay team finished third. It's been a great deal."

The only other meet record came in the girls 4x800 relay, where Rogers High's team of Halle Gilreath, Aubre Gilreath, Olivia Groeber and Anna Jeffcoat turned in a time of 9:38.69, breaking the previous meet mark of 9:45.81 by Bentonville in 2006.
