Trivia to help in pursuit of home

Organizers hope an evening of trivia will further their pursuit of establishing a home for boys who have "aged out" of the foster care system at the age of 18. Many of them are left completely on their own with no one to guide them through the challenges and tasks of adulthood.

The fundraiser May 14 at the Center for Nonprofits at St. Mary's in Rogers will benefit Micah's House. Shane Sturdivant, executive director, said the plans for the home, which will be purchased in Rogers, include an addition that will allow the group to house six to eight young men in a "progressively independent living and mentoring program."

Sturdivant said the group wants to give those it serves a "normalizing experience" for kids who haven't had stable family lives. That experience will includes things like cooking and eating meals together, working in the yard together, watching movies ... "Those things you do as a family."

Residents will be required to have jobs or go to school, maintain a budget and contribute to household expenses.

Long term plans for the nonprofit organization include purchasing a small apartment complex for the young men as they move toward living more independently after 18 months to two years in the home. The mentoring program they provide will help establish long term relationships that mean "they will have somewhere to go for Christmas, someone to introduce their girlfriend to," Sturdivant said.

The casual fundraiser will feature a trivia competition between tables and live and silent auctions.
