Harrell

named director

Clayton Harrell will become the director of athletics and dean of students for middle and upper schools at The New School in Fayetteville, effective July 1. Harrell will guide and manage the school’s growing athletics program and its facilities. Harrell also will serve as dean of students, assisting with all student life policies and procedures and student behavior and discipline.

Harrell is currently the athletic director at St. Thomas Episcopal School, a coeducational day school in Houston.

McDonell named to council

Martin McDonell, director of the social work program at the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith, has been named to the Arkansas State Independent Living Council by Gov. Asa Hutchinson.

McDonell, who came to UAFS in August, will serve on the board through Feb. 1, 2019. His appointment replaces previous board member Robyn Horn.

As board member, McDonell will collaborate with the Centers for Independent Living to provide services to those with disabilities, enabling them to live more independently in their communities. Those services include information and referrals, peer support and independent living skills training and advocacy.

McDonell holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from San Diego State University, a master’s degree in social work from California State University at Long Beach and a doctorate degree in social work from the University of Utah.

PBS KIDS

Writers Contest

The Arkansas Educational Television Network has announced winners of the AETN PBS KIDS Writers Contest. The contest was designed to promote the advancement of children’s reading skills through handson, active learning. Entries were judged on originality, creative expression, storytelling and integration of text and illustrations. Winners receive an AETN prize pack, and first place winners will be given the opportunity for Clifford the Big Red Dog to visit their school or to tour the AETN studios in Conway.

Local winners included Yahya Sridjajamerta of Fayetteville, kindergarten, second place for “The Police”; Jessica Liao of Fayetteville, second grade, second place for “Jessica Moving to Arkansas”; Keynes Wright of Bentonville, third grade, first place for “Boy in the Island”; and Jaidyn Moy of Bentonville, third grade, third place for “Attack of Candy City.”

Hester Cemetery

The Hester Cemetery Association annual meeting will be held at 2 p.m. May 15 at the Baldwin Church of Christ located at 4399 E. Huntsville Road in Fayetteville’s Baldwin community.
