STATE TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Genoa Central sweeps 3A titles

GREEN FOREST -- It was a record-setting day from the beginning to the end as the Class 3A state track and field meet was held Tuesday at Tiger Stadium in Geeen Forest.

Starting with the first girls field event to the last boys running event of the evening, nine Class 3A records fell.

And along the way, Genoa Central managed to sweep the team titles, combining for 218 total points, outdistancing host Green Forest, which totaled 96.75 points.

The Lady Dragons easily won the girls title, scoring 127 points while second place Green Forest had 53 and third place Greenland had 50. It's the second consecutive state championship for Genoa Central, which has three titles, the first coming in 2006.

The Dragons, on the other hand, won their first state championship by compiling 91 points, beating runner-up Prescott by 28 points. The Curley Wolves were last year's champs and had won the 3A title five of the last nine years.

Genoa Central also had both of the high-point medalists as Elizabeth Clinton led the Lady Dragons with 28 points and Tyler Moreland paced the Dragons with 30.5 points.

Clinton did not win a single event but she was second in the triple jump, third in the long jump and 100-meter dash, fifth in the 400-meter dash, seventh in the 200-meter dash and was part of the 1,600 relay team that finished second.

Moreland won the 300-meter hurdles and was part of the first place 1,600- meter relay team. He finished second in the 110-meter hurdles and the discus and was seventh in the shot put.

The first event of the day produced the first state record as Rivercrest's Sydney Lane jumped 5-41/2 in the girls high jump, besting Mansfield's Jessica Otto's 2010 record of 5-4.

And not too long after that, Green Forest's Kelby Harness set the new mark in the girls discus with a throw of 120-11, breaking Genoa Central's Christy Cutshall's mark of 113-8 in 2010. Later in the day, Harness won the shot put and narrowly missed the record in that event.

Both girls and boys 100-meter dash records were set as Fordyce's Robyn Bird set the girls mark by .06 seconds and Jordan Jones of Smackover set the boys' mark by .13.

Bird later came back to set the girls 200-meter dash mark with a time of 25.96.

Harding Academy's Bryce Wiedower set the boys 800-meter run mark by almost two minutes.

All three boys relay records fell as the Greenland 3,200 team beat the old mark by 11 seconds. Lakeside's 400 team beat the old mark by half a second and the Genoa Central 1,600 team ended the day with the ninth record.
