Close relay boosts Forrest City to state title

HOT SPRINGS -- With just two seconds separating first place from sixth place, the boys 400-meter relay proved to be one of the most exciting events of Tuesday's Class 5A state championship meet at Reese Memorial Stadium.

Forrest City won the event with a time of 43.67 seconds, followed by Maumelle at 43.98, Watson Chapel at 44.13, Magnolia at 44.53, Batesville at 44.64 and Nettleton at 45.63. Forrest City's first-place finish combined with a third-place finish in the 1,600-meter relay and a fourth-place finish in the 3,200-meter relay fueled the Mustangs to an overall state championship with 107 points.

Vilonia was the state runner-up with 82 total points.

The Eagles finished first in the 3,200-meter relay with a time of 8:17, holding off Harrison and Magnolia at 8:25. Vilonia also captured a state championship in the 1,600-meter relay with a time of 3:25, edging out Batesville at 3:26 and Forrest City at 3:27.

White Hall finished first in the girls 400-meter relay with a time of 49.79 seconds, followed closely by Magnolia at 49.83 and Nettleton at 50.83. Little Rock Christian won the 3,200-meter relay going away. The Lady Warriors cruised to a first-place finish at 10:07, with Sylvan Hills coming in second at 10:23 and Beebe rounding out the top three at 10:28. The Beebe Lady Badgers earned a first-place finish in the 1,600-meter relay with a time of 4:22, followed by Greenbrier at 4:26 and Harrison at 4:29.

Seth Waters of Harrison beat Hot Springs' Joe Sartini by a second in the 800 meters. Waters clocked in at 1:57.

Little Rock Christian's Erin Woodward won the girls 1,600 meters in 5:13.

Lakeside's Emily Milbourn finished in third place with 5:37, clocking three seconds behind Little Rock Christian's Allison Risius.
