A three-run home run from third baseman Grayson Atwood in the bottom of the ninth gave Appalachian State (13-31, 8-16 Sun Belt) the series victory over Arkansas State (20-23, 9-15) at Beaver Field in Boone, N.C.

Tyler Stroup flied out to left field to begin the ninth for the Mountaineers, then Matt Vernon hit a double. Brian Bauk reached on a bunt single and Vernon advanced to third. Tanner Ring, who started at shortstop and finished 2 for 4, came in to relieve Coulton Lee and gave up Atwood's home run to left field on a 2-1 pitch.

ASU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Garrett Rucker scored on Austin Baker's single to center field. Appalachian State took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third on a two-run home run from Brian Bauk, his second of the season. They extended the lead to 3-1 in the fourth inning when Conner Leonard scored on a bases-loaded walk issued to Stroup.

The Red Wolves tied the game in the fifth inning and retook the lead in the sixth. Rucker scored on a wild pitch in the fifth inning and Ring scored when Jeremy Brown reached on a fielder's choice to tie the game at 3-3. Jake Bakamus scored in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly from Joe Schrimpf to take a 4-3 lead.

Baker and Bakamus also finished 2 for 4 to lead ASU, which stranded 11 base runners, while Rucker was 2 for 5. Bauk was 4 for 5 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBI to lead Appalachian State. Mountaineers reliever Reed Howell (5-1) got the victory after allowing 1 earned run on 3 hits with 2 strikeouts and 1 walk in 41/3 innings. Lee (5-4) took the loss for the Red Wolves. He allowed 2 earned runs on 6 hits with 5 strikeouts in 42/3 innings. ASU starter Adam Grantham went 32/3 innings, allowing 3 earned runs on 4 hits with 3 walks, 2 strikeouts, 1 hit batter and 1 wild pitch.
