3 storms produce hail around state

Thunderstorms across the state dumped what meteorologists called "tremendous" amounts of hail Saturday evening.

Three storm systems developed over Conway, Searcy and Baxter counties, and produced golf-ball sized hailstones that blanketed the ground in some communities, according to the National Weather Service.

A tornado warning was issued in Conway County after a storm threatened several areas from Blackwell to Lake Overcup. Weather conditions created three funnel clouds, but no reported touchdowns. The warning was lifted by 7:30 p.m. as the storm continued to drop hail.

"The storm environment really wasn't ideal for tornadoes tonight, so this was kind of an anomaly among the other storms that we've got out there," National Weather Service meteorologist Dan Koch said Saturday evening. "This one [in Morrilton] is a little further south than anything else, and there may be just a little bit more favorable environment for it."

Hail chances were expected to diminish throughout Saturday night with the possibility of some hail lingering in the state's northeast.

Today is expected to be dry, with rain returning to the state's southwest after midnight.
