Second half fuels Guy-Perkins

BROCKWELL -- After a back-and-forth second quarter, Guy-Perkins began pulling away early in the second half, eventually outscoring Kirby 31-13 over the final two quarters for a 60-40 victory Friday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the Class 1A boys state tournament at Izard County High School.

Guy-Perkins (39-0) held a 29-27 lead at halftime then began the second half with a 4-0 run as the Thunderbirds stretched their lead to 36-29 on a bucket by Coree Ealy with 6:30 to go in the quarter. Carson Smith made a three-pointer at 5:02 to pull Kirby within 36-32, but the Trojans (28-12) could get no closer.

Guy-Perkins scored the next four, and was up 46-37 when Tim Campbell finished the third quarter with a three-pointer to give the Thunderbirds a 49-37 lead. Campbell's second three-pointer of the night came with 5:45 left and put Guy-Perkins up 56-37.

Lee Whisenhunt converted a three-point play with five minutes left for Kirby's only points of the final quarter.

Guy-Perkins led 14-7 after the first quarter and led 16-8 early in the second when Kirby scored eight in a row, pulling even at 16-16 on a steal and layup by Spencer Jones with 4:52 left in the half.

After a Guy-Perkins free throw, Whisenhunt scored to give the Trojans their first lead at 18-17. The lead then went back and forth before Kirby took its last lead at 24-23 on a basket by Smith at the 1:50 mark.

The Thunderbirds went ahead 25-24 on a jumper by Tre Minton, who then hit two free throws at 1:08. Kirby made 3 of 4 free throws to tie the score at 27-27 with 37.6 seconds left and then a tip-in at the buzzer by Campbell put Guy-Perkins up 29-27.

Campbell finished with 17 points and Minton had 16 to lead Guy-Perkins.

Whisenhunt led Kirby with 18 points while Smith added 12.

COUNTY LINE 68, IZARD COUNTY 51

The Indians (33-5) broke open a close game in the first half with a huge 22-4 run in the third quarter and led by as many as 22 points in the final quarter.

Evan Johnston led County Line with 17 points, Gage Gattis and Alex Gregory each had 15 and Cory Wilhelm chipped in 10.

Andrew Walker led Izard County with 26 points and Tanner Brooks had 10.
