Pottsville posts milestone victory

MALVERN -- The Pottsville Lady Apaches achieved a milestone Wednesday when they defeated Pine Bluff Dollarway 55-42 in the first round of the Class 4A girls state tournament at the Leopard Center in Malvern.

"This is the first time since coming to 4A that we have won a state tournament game," Pottsville Coach Chance Johnson said. "The key was our rebounding defensively, and we hit some big shots early."

Ashley Brannon scored 13 points, including six consecutive in the fourth quarter to widen the Lady Apaches lead to 14 points, to lead Pottsville.

Pottsville (23-6) got three-pointers from Katie Cormier and Skylar Campbell in the first minute of the game, and Madi Rust added a three-pointer for a 12-3 lead. Dollarway got two baskets from Serenity Alexander to cut into the Pottsville lead, but Aspen Campbell added two scores -- the last one at the buzzer -- for a 19-11 first-quarter lead.

Dollarway (19-17) got two baskets from Jayana Sanders, who led all scorers with 16 points, early in the second quarter, but baskets by Rust, Carlee McClure and Brannon pushed the Pottsville lead to 27-17 at halftime.

Rust scored five points in the third quarter, which led Pottsville to a 39-27 advantage. Campbell, Bailey Floyd and Cormier scored baskets early in the the fourth quarter to open up a 45-29 lead.

Rust and Campbell finished with nine points each, while Alexander scored 11 points for Dollarway. Pottsville will face Riverview in the state quarterfinals today at 7 p.m.

E-STEM 59, NASHVILLE 39

Mariah Adams scored 16 points and Carly Clements added 12 points on four three-pointers to lead E-Stem (29-7) past Nashville.

E-Stem trailed 29-26 at halftime, but it outscored Nashville 14-6 in the third quarter to take a five-point lead. E-Stem held Nashville (25-6) to only four points in the fourth quarter.

Lilly Kidd led Nashville with 14 points.

CENTRAL ARK. CHRISTIAN 44, HUNTSVILLE 31

Christyn Williams scored 25 points to lead Central Arkansas Christian. CAC (22-13) led 16-5 after the first quarter on baskets from Williams, Jena Davis and Lauren Peoples. Delanie Tipton led Huntsville (19-12) with 16 points, while Cheyenne Walkingstick added 12.
