FAYETTEVILLE -- Spencer Brown is not listed among the Fayetteville boys' basketball coaching staff.

But the way the senior point guard plays on the floor, perhaps he should be.

"People don't understand how much he does for us, as far as calling stuff out there on the floor offensively and defensively," Fayetteville Coach Kyle Adams said. "He's like having a coach out there on the floor, and he's so valuable."

Brown, a 6-2 two-year starter, has spent most of his career doing dirty work. With teammates such as Vanderbilt signee Payton Willis handling the bulk of the scoring, it was Brown's job to keep the pressure off Willis and the other teammates.

This season, Brown's role has increased from a pass-first point guard to a playmaker. Averaging 7.3 points, 2.4 assists and 1.7 steals per game, Brown has been the go-to guy behind Willis on many occasions.

On Friday, his 15 points and five rebounds at Bentonville -- including a three-pointer in overtime -- were vital in a 78-76 victory to clinch Fayetteville's outright 7A-West Conference crown.

"Really my expectations of Spencer are so high, and he's exceeded those expectations just about every time," Adams said. "He's been clutch at the free-throw line down the stretch in conference, he hits a big three the other night in overtime at Bentonville, and it just seems like every game he comes up with one or two plays at the right time that are crucial for us."

Brown still considers himself a team player.

"I'm just kind of the everything guy," Brown said. "If you need a rebound, I'll go get it; if you need an assist, I'll go get it; and if you need a bucket, I can go get it."

Basketball is deeply rooted in Brown's bloodlines. His mother, Allyson Twiggs Dyer, lettered at Arkansas from 1990-95 and his father, Spencer Brown, played football at Arkansas from 1992-95 and coaches his son on his AAU Arkansas Hawks basketball team.

Brown is determined to play in college but hasn't decided where. He also wants to coach when his playing career ends.

"I love the game," Brown said. "I definitely want to coach and stay around basketball. I just love it, and I think being a collegiate coach and teaching people what I know would be amazing."

The way Brown has grown in the Fayetteville (24-3) program, Adams has no doubt his point guard will be a success if coaching is his future profession.

"Both his mom and his dad played ball, and he's been around it all his life," Adams said. "He thinks the game very, very well. He's always giving me suggestions during a timeout or during a break in the game, like a free throw or something where he can come over and we can discuss something."
