Media, politicians don't know to respond to shootings

Amazing reactions to the recent Orlando massacre. President Obama didn't know the motivation of the shooter and says it wasn't part of a "plot." Someone plotted it.

The liberal media, politicians and leftist churches blame the escapade on guns while the real enemy is under their noses. The city leading the nation in gun crimes and gun deaths is Chicago, Ill., where owning a gun is illegal. Guns can't be the problem there because, conceivably, there are no guns in Chicago!

France has restricted gun ownership and self-avowed Islamic terrorists killed French citizens. In Brussels, it was three Islamic terrorists and bombs.

According to the Homeland Security chief, we must "reach out to the Muslim community." How about them providing some help in flushing out these killers instead? Because none of the groups mentioned in the second paragraph has any clue how to solve this problem.

Be careful with Dickson Street entertainment district

I agree with Carl Collier that we need to spend some time and money to study what would be a best practice to develop the land that's now a parking lot across from the Walton Arts Center, in the heart of the entertainment district. Please, please, please not another soulless office building here.

This property is surrounded by the newly remodeled Walton Arts Center, the Nadine Baum Center that supports children's education, the very popular and much admired Theatre Squared and, of course, our very popular Dixon Street, the home of many crowd-pleasing, revenue-raising events.

My personal vision of this property is a lovely botanical park with seating and walkways winding through beautiful plants and specimen trees. Some of these specimens could be in containers that could be rearranged to allow for vendor stations from time to time.

The south end of the garden might have a large band shell with a grassy seating area for concerts such as those that appear at Bikes Blues & BBQ. The band shell might also be used as a venue for things like a People's Shakespeare Festival or for the university to showcase musical and theater events.

A study perhaps? Please!

Whatever is determined by the studies, the city fathers must remember the key here to any solution. This venue is the heart of the city's entertainment district.

May they decide wisely!
