Hobbs to host kayak workshops

Hobbs State Park-Conservation Area will hold several kayak workshops through the summer. Workshops are held in a quiet cove on Beaver Lake.

Cost is $50 and includes a kayak, all equipment and instruction by Jay Schneider, assistant park superintendent. He’s a qualified instructor of the American Canoe Association. The first workshop is Wednesday. Other dates are July 10, 31, and Aug. 5, 7, 16 and 31.

Archery club

sets 3-D shoot

Cherokee Bowhunters Archery Club will host a 3-D archery shoot Saturday at Fort Crowder Conservation Area archery range near Neosho, Mo.

All archers are welcome. Cost is $10 for adult nonmembers. The course features 40 3-D animal targets. Archers may start anytime between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. For details visit www.cherokeebowhunters.org or call 417-439-7054.

Crappie group

plans tournaments

Beaver Lake Crappie Association has formed to conduct crappie tournaments at Beaver Lake. Plans are to hold two tournaments per month on Saturdays. The dates have not been set.

Cost is a $40 membership fee per angler and an entry fee of $60 per boat for each tournament, with two anglers per boat. There is a seven-fish tournament limit, except from February through May when the tournament limit is 15. Prize money is awarded for the heaviest catches and also the largest crappie.

Area youths

up to challenge

Youth shooting teams from around Arkansas competed June 10-12 in the 20th annual Youth Hunter Education Challenge State Championship held at the C.A. Vines 4H Center near Little Rock.

Some 250 youths competed in a variety of shooting and outdoor contests.

In the junior division, Ozark Youth Shooting Team No. 1 of Benton County took first place. Team members are Cadyn Meredith, Courtney Stephens, Hayden Bowen, Hunter Stover and Spencer Bittle.

Ozark Youth Shooting Team No. 2 of Benton County placed third. Team members are Annie Downum, Emily Holly, Faith Fritch, Morgen Puryear and Ryan Lane. Lane also took third place overall at the event.

In the senior division, Ozark Youth Shooting Team Seniors No. 1 of Benton County placed second. Team members are Austin Abercrombie, Blake Parsley, Dustin Morris, Hogan Bowen and Matthew Harris.
