Design firm lauded as good workplace

Harrison French and Associates Ltd. received a 2016 When Work Works Award from the Families and Work Institute and the Society for Human Resource Management.

Applicants were evaluated on six research areas from an employee survey: opportunities for learning; a culture of trust; work/life fit; supervisor support for work success; autonomy; and satisfaction with earnings, benefits and opportunities for advancement.

The Bentonville multidisciplinary design firm began 25 years ago. It has additional offices in Boston and Fort Worth and employs more than 200 people. Harrison French and Associates offers architecture, interior and landscape design, fire protection, and civil and structural engineering.

2 hard ciders earn international honors

Two of Black Apple Crossing's hard ciders received awards at the Dan Berger's International Cider Competition earlier this month. The 1904 and the Fitz were recognized at the bronze level from among more than 200 entries.

The Fitz is the first in Black Apple's Ozark Series, which features apples sourced from the Ozarks region in southern Missouri and northern Arkansas. The 1904 is also from the Ozark Series, and is a semisweet cider back-sweetened with raw agave nectar to achieve its unique balance.

Black Apple Crossing opened in downtown Springdale on July 25 by founders Trey Holt, John Handley and Leo Orpin. It serves eight varieties of hard cider from a taproom at 321 E. Emma Ave.

Trane in Fort Smith recognized for safety

The Trane plant in Fort Smith was honored with a pair of safety awards by the Arkansas Department of Labor, the Arkansas Insurance Department and the Arkansas Workers' Compensation Commission.

The agencies recognized the company for achieving two years and 1 million hours without a lost-time incident. Trane reached two years on April 28 and 1 million hours on March 13.

The Fort Smith plant at 4811 S. Zero St. has more than 250 employees. The plant has manufactured residential and light commercial solutions for more than 40 years.
