SURVIVOR SCHOLARSHIPS

CARTI Foundation awards grants to survivors of cancer

Growing up and getting an education is tough enough without a major health problem like cancer. The CARTI Foundation on Tuesday awarded $3,000 scholarships to 20 pediatric cancer survivors from across the state during a ceremony hosted by Gov. Asa Hutchinson and first lady Susan Hutchinson at the Governor's Mansion.

Recipients, donors, CARTI Foundation board members and others enjoyed a light reception including fruit skewers with accompaniments and lemonade before sitting down to the business of giving money to some young people who have had or are currently being treated for cancer at CARTI and/or Arkansas Children's Hospital.

The scholarships are named for Dennis Jungmeyer, a prostate cancer survivor and director emeritus of the CARTI Foundation board of directors. Recipients in attendance were Heidi Abston of Searcy, Khadijah Alexander of Bryant, Elijah Barnes of Mena, Brayden Beshears of Greenwood, Sarah Beth Briggler and Haley Goodwin of Conway, Cheryl Harp of Bentonville, Job McCully of Bigelow, Anna Grace McFadden of Little Rock, Kaden Peebles of Nashville, Jake Stevens of Rogers and Kristen Worley of Benton.

Mary Machen, a 40-year employee of CARTI and retiring director of the CARTI Kids program, received the 2016 Z. Lynn Zeno Award.
