Superintendent in Bella Vista deserves praise
The Tanyard Creek Nature Trail Volunteers of Bella Vista congratulate Vern Olafson on his recent retirement. As lakes and parks superintendent, he has worked very hard for many years to maintain the nature trail and our community’s other amenities for the benefit of all. Our volunteer group has enjoyed an excellent working relationship with Mr. Olafson over the years, and we wish him the very best as he transitions to his new status as a retired Bella Vista resident.

Hobson’s notion of ‘greatest’ president wrong
After reading Art Hobson’s article in the June 14 edition of the Democrat Gazette, I feel obligated to respond. Hobson stated Obama is the “greatest president since Franklin Roosevelt.” I recall President Truman ending World War II, thereby saving millions of lives. I recall President Eisenhower sending federal troops to integrate our public schools, thereby assuring everyone the opportunity to receive an education. I recall President Kennedy ordering a blockade of Cuba, thereby preventing Russian nuclear bomb sites from being within 100 miles from the United States. I recall President Johnson passing more civil rights laws than any president since Abraham Lincoln. I recall President Reagan not only containing the “Cold War,” but actually ending it, thereby keeping America and the entire world safer. What has Hobson’s “greatest president” since FDR done that compares to any of the above? Oh, yes: He has increased the national debt to an unprecedented level. He has released Muslim terrorists from Guantanamo so that they can return to the battlefield to kill Americans. He has refused to even acknowledge that we are at war with Muslim terrorists. He has refused to deport illegal aliens who have been convicted of felony crimes. He has played a lot of golf (reminds me of Nero fiddling while Rome burned). The greatest president since Franklin Roosevelt? I don’t think so.
