FAYETTEVILLE — A Fayetteville man accused of cutting a woman with a knife and trying to take her vehicle after she had given him a ride home was arrested Thursday, according to a preliminary police report.

Melvin Erick Gutierrez, 21, of 2100 N. Leverett Ave., Apt. 99, was arrested early Thursday morning in connection with aggravated robbery and second-degree domestic battery, both felonies, and misdemeanor carrying a weapon, public intoxication and obstructing government operations.

The woman’s injuries were not life-threatening, police spokesman Craig Stout said Thursday.

Gutierrez and the woman met over a dating app and had been on a date, Stout said.

The preliminary report stated the woman said she was attacked after dropping off Gutierrez at his apartment complex.

Gutierrez told the woman he had a “gift” for her and asked her to wait while he went inside his apartment, the report shows. When he returned, Gutierrez pulled out a kitchen knife and told the woman he needed her car, according to the report.

The two struggled, and Gutierrez tried to push her out of the car and said, “I’ll cut you,” according to the report. Gutierrez slashed at the woman while she pushed the car horn and screamed for help, according to the report.

The woman was cut twice on her right arm, according to the report.

Gutierrez fled but left documents that identified him inside the vehicle, according to the report. Police also found a towel, drinking glass, nightgown and vodka bottle as evidence, the report shows.

Police later found and arrested Gutierrez. Police found a kitchen knife nearby, the report shows.

Gutierrez was being held Thursday at the Washington County Detention Center with no bond set.
