EL DORADO — The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission will vote on new regulations next week aimed at slowing the spread of chronic wasting disease.
The commission met Thursday in El Dorado and discussed the proposal, which would establish a chronic wasting disease management zone in 10 north Arkansas counties. Under the proposal, using bait to hunt deer would only be allowed from Oct. 1 to Dec. 31 within the management zone.
Chronic wasting disease is a neurological disease that affects animals such as deer, elk and moose. Officials say that 90 deer and four elk have tested positive for the fatal disease in Arkansas.
The proposed management zone includes Boone, Carroll, Johnson, Logan, Madison, Marion, Newton, Pope, Searcy and Yell counties. Commissioners will vote on the proposal June 24.
