Marlins take former Tiger Hill

Trenton Hill, a former Bentonville baseball standout, was selected by the Florida Marlins in the 34th round of the Major League Baseball draft Saturday afternoon and was the 1,013th pick overall.

Hill, a 6-foot-3 225-pound left-hander, split time between right field and pitcher and started all 48 games for Lee University, an NCAA Division II school located in Cleveland, Tenn. The Flames finished 30-18 overall and 18-11 in Gulf South Conference play.

Hill, a two-year starter after he transferred from Maple Woods Community College near Kansas City, made 13 appearances on the mound and had a 6-2 record with a team-leading 2,83 ERA and 59 strikeouts in 60.1 innings. He was also the team’s second-leading hitter with a .378 batting average with seven home runs and 45 RBIs.
