Library expansion plan is ‘incredible bargain’

I did the math on the library millage increase.

If the increase passes, the cost to my family of five will be about $20 each for the first year. That’s about $2 a week for our family. And my understanding is the amount will get even lower after the initial construction is paid off.

This is an incredible bargain. We get so much more value than this out of the library.

Some election decisions are hard, but this one is a no-brainer: Vote “yes” for the library.

Questions about the liberal perspective

I’ve just become aware of Harvard Law School professor Mark Tushnet and his comments in a blog on May 6: “The culture wars are over; they lost, we won. … For liberals, the question now is how to deal with the losers … My own judgment is that taking a hard line (“You lost, live with It’) is better than trying to accommodate the losers. … Taking a hard line seemed to work reasonably well in Germany and Japan in 1945.” Is that hate speech?

Who’s lobbying Obama to remove an exemption for religious nonprofits that receive federal grants which will alter their hiring practices? A panel of professors at Columbia University Law School.

Pulitzer Prize winner Nicholas Kristof wrote of “liberal arrogance” that discriminates against conservatives. “Universities risk becoming literal echo chambers and hostile environments … especially for evangelical Christians. As I see it, we are hypocritical: We welcome people who don’t look like us, as long as they think like us.”

The cover of my August 2016 Consumer Reports announces, “I kind of ruined my life by going to college,” [a comment by] Jackie Krowen, 32, of Portland, Ore. She has $152,000 in student debt. In fact, 42 million people owe $1.3 trillion in student debt. And instead of universities lowering tuitions, they keep raising them depending on (eventually) the Feds (taxpayers) bailing out those who are in debt for “education.” And if Hillary is elected, many will go to college for free!

The magazine story is worth reading for anyone who is planning to send a family member to college. Count the costs. In more ways than one.

Do vampires react to the Constitution?

Do you remember those old scary vampire movies, when the good guy pulls out a cross, holds it up to the face of the vampire, who then shrinks away in horror to crawl off and die? I think we should all get a pocketbook copy of the Constitution and when a Trump supporter starts foaming at the mouth and “goes rabid” on us, we whip out the Constitution like Mr. Khan — Muslim father of Muslim son who gave his life in Afghanistan, saving 10 Americans — did at DNC, asking the rumpster, “Have you ever read the Constitution? Look for the words ‘equal protection under the law’! I’ll gladly lend you my copy!”
