COWBOYS

Gregory fails another test

Dallas Cowboys defensive end Randy Gregory has failed another drug test, according to multiple sources, and may not play at all in 2016.

Gregory was already suspended for the first four games of the 2016 for violating in the NFL substance abuse policy. According to a source, he was getting treatment and checked out of the facility for a weekend, resulting in another failed test.

He now faces a longer suspension from the NFL. The next stage of the league's substance abuse program calls for a 10-game suspension. But a source believes Gregory won't play at all this season.

He is back in a treatment facility and not expected to be in Oxnard, Calif., when the Cowboys report to training camp Thursday.

Cowboys Coach Jason Garrett declined comment on Gregory when asked about him Tuesday at the Dallas Cowboys annual coaches clinic.

The terms of the original four-game suspension allows Gregory to practice and play with the Cowboys in preseason. As of now, he is not reporting to training camp.

It's the continuation of a bad run for Gregory since coming to the Cowboys in the second round of the 2015 NFL Draft.

A first-round talent out of Nebraska, Gregory fell to the second round because he failed a drug test before the 2015 NFL scouting combine. He subsequently failed two more tests as a rookie, prompting the four-game suspension.

Gregory was set back on the field as a rookie because of a high ankle sprain, recording zero sacks in 12 games in 2015.

As recently as two weeks ago, owner Jerry Jones still had high hopes for Gregory, calling him the team's most talented pass rusher and one who could develop into a special player.

CHIEFS

Houston won't practice

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- Kansas City Chiefs outside linebacker Justin Houston won't practice with the team during training at Missouri Western State, Coach Andy Reid said Tuesday.

When Houston underwent surgery in February to fix a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, the team gave him a six- to 12-month recovery timetable, which would have put him on track to return in mid-August at the earliest. That's around the time training camp comes to a close.

Reid, however, said he does expect the Chiefs' star 27-year-old outside linebacker to report to camp at Missouri Western. Veterans are scheduled to arrive on Friday.

"He'll be here, he's just not gonna be able to do the football stuff," Reid said. "He'll rehab and continue on with his rehab."

The Chiefs will need him. He is among the best players in football, as evidenced by his 22-sack 2014 season, and among the highest paid as he enters the second year of a Chiefs-record six-year, $101 million deal.

He recorded 30 tackles and 71/2 sacks in 11 games last season before suffering a hyperextended left knee against San Diego in November.

BROWNS

WR Gordon out 2 weeks

CLEVELAND -- Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon is expected to miss at least two weeks of training camp with a quadriceps injury, the latest setback for the troubled player.

Gordon, 25, who was reinstated on Monday by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell after a lengthy suspension for drug violations, took a physical on Tuesday and it was determined he needs time to recover from an injury sustained while working out on his own.

The team placed him on the active/non-football injury list. He also met with head of football operations Sashi Brown, Coach Hue Jackson and others within the organization who laid out their expectations for him.

Gordon hasn't played since 2014. He was suspended all of last season for violating the league's substance-abuse policy.

REDSKINS

Galette out for season

Washington Redskins linebacker Junior Galette tore his right Achilles tendon and will miss the 2016 NFL season.

Galette tweeted about the injury on Monday, just before players were set to report to training camp in Richmond, Virginia. He missed the 2015 season with a torn left Achilles tendon.

The loss of Galette is a major blow to the Redskins' defense, which added All-Pro cornerback Josh Norman in free agency. Galette's return was supposed to boost Washington's pass rush.

The 28-year-old last played for the New Orleans Saints in 2014 when he had 10 sacks and 45 tackles. The Redskins re-signed him to a $4 million, one-year deal during the offseason.

LIONS

Boldin, Caldwell reunite

DETROIT -- Anquan Boldin is joining the Detroit Lions, according to messages on the free-agent receiver's Twitter account Tuesday.

Boldin tweeted that he's excited to reunite with Detroit Coach Jim Caldwell, and said he hopes he can help the Lions reach the postseason. Boldin played the past three seasons for the San Francisco 49ers, but prior to that he was with Baltimore for three seasons. In Boldin's final season with the Ravens, they won the Super Bowl with Caldwell as offensive coordinator.

Boldin caught 69 passes for 789 yards and 4 touchdowns last season for the 49ers. The Lions have had to add to their receiving group this offseason, with Calvin Johnson now retired.

SEAHAWKS

Coach's contract extended

RENTON, Wash. -- The Seattle Seahawks and Coach Pete Carroll have agreed on a contract extension, keeping the oldest head coach in the NFL locked up beyond the 2016 season.

Team owner Paul Allen tweeted confirmation of Carroll's deal on Tuesday.

The move with Carroll, 64, came just two days after the team locked up General Manager John Schneider to a contract extension.

Both Carroll's and Schneider's current deals were set to expire after the 2016 season, but the pairing that has brought the Seahawks unrivaled success in their franchise history will be teamed together for another few seasons.

Carroll is 60-36 in the regular season since becoming Seattle's head coach in 2010. He's taken the Seahawks to the playoffs in five of six seasons, including two Super Bowl appearances and the only title in franchise history.

Carroll's deal was first reported by ESPN, which said the extension goes through the 2019 season.
