Body in Arkansas River that of missing teen

The Pulaski County sheriff's office confirmed Monday that a body recovered Sunday in the Arkansas River was that of a man who disappeared in the river over the weekend.

The agency identified the man as Khalil Smith, 19. Smith's family and friends had previously identified him as the swimmer missing Saturday afternoon on the North Little Rock side of the river near Riverview Park.

The sheriff's office and the North Little Rock Fire Department searched for Smith for more than 16 hours before divers found his body about 9:55 a.m. Sunday. Smith's body was recovered about 25 yards from the riverbank, not far from where he was last seen in the water, sheriff's office spokesman Capt. Carl Minden said.

Smith's body was taken to the state Crime Lab for autopsy.

Minden said the drowning is believed to be accidental.
