2 killed, 5 injured in separate accidents

A Drew County man was killed early Monday when he got out of his truck to retrieve some tools that had fallen from his pickup onto the highway, according to the sheriff's office.

Zachary Len Jones, 20, of Tillar and a co-worker were driving west on Arkansas 138 when a toolbox fell from the back of the truck. Jones turned around, pulled over in the eastbound lane and walked to the westbound lane to collect the tools, authorities said in a statement.

An oncoming vehicle swerved into the westbound lane to avoid Jones' truck and struck Jones, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities said conditions were clear and dry.

Another Arkansan was killed Sunday night and five others, including three minors, were injured after a two-vehicle collision on U.S. 412 in Carroll County, near Dryfork.

Misty D. Phillipsof Huntsville was driving east shortly before 5 p.m. when her Ford crossed into oncoming traffic.

The crash killed Phillips, 38. Five people in the other vehicle: Brent Culp, 28, and Erica Culp, 27, both of Fayetteville; and three unnamed minors from Springdale, Farmington and Huntsville were injured when Phillips collided with their Nissan.
