2-year-old boy dies in McDonald County, Mo., after getting stuck in car

A 2-year-old boy died Saturday in McDonald County, Mo., after getting stuck in a parked car, according to a news release from the McDonald County Sheriff's Office.

A father told deputies his four children and a niece had been playing in his yard at 447 Old Rural Road in Rocky Comfort, Mo., and that he had been checking on them frequently, according to the news release.

When he noticed that he couldn't see the boy, he began searching for him, and found him on the floor of a car parked in the yard, the news release stated. The car's doors were locked. The man broke a window, got the boy out, called 911 and began performing CPR, according to the news release.

The boy was flown to Mercy Hospital in Joplin, Mo., where he was pronounced dead, the news release stated.

The temperature in Rocky Comfort reached 95 degrees Saturday afternoon with a heat index of 101 degree, according to the National Weather Service. Sheriff Michael Hall said in an email that the boy's death was heat related.

The boy's death will be investigated by the Children's Division of the Missouri Department of Social Services, according to the news release.

The father and the boy were not named in the news release.
