Missouri University of Science and Technology

Missouri University of Science and Technology in Rolla awarded degrees to three local students during spring 2016 commencement ceremonies May 14. Jason Todd Howard of Berryville earned a bachelor of science in metallurgical engineering, magna cum laude. Payton Thomas Jimison of Lowell earned a bachelor of science in metallurgical engineering, cum laude. Daniel Madison Townzen of Rogers earned a bachelor of science in chemistry, summa cum laude.

Maryville University

Luke Renner of Fayetteville was named to the deans’ list for the spring 2016 semester at Maryville University in St. Louis, with a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher.

Olivet Nazarene University

Jeffrey Smith of Gravette was named to the spring 2016 dean’s list at Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, Ill., with a grade-point average of 3.50 or higher.

Westminster College

Axel Izaguirre-Garcia, a sophomore from Bethel Heights, was a spring 2016 initiate into the Alpha Lambda Delta national honor society at Westminster College in Fulton, Mo.

The honor includes students with 3.5 or higher grade-point averages and rankings in the top 20 percent of their classes during their first years of higher education.

Southwest Baptist University

Three local students were graduated from Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar, Mo., in the spring 2016 commencement ceremonies May 12-14. Graduates were awarded honors with the following grade-point averages: summa cum laude, 3.85 to 4.0; magna cum laude, 3.7 to 3.849; and cum laude, 3.5 to 3.699.

Caleb Jones of Huntsville earned a bachelor of science. Sarah Zluticky of Mansfield received a bachelor of science, magna cum laude. Cody Osbourno of Fayetteville was awarded a doctor of physical therapy degree.

Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar, Mo., listed several area students on the spring 2016 honor roll lists.

Peter Valdes of Rogers earned a bachelor of business administration. Taylor Williams of Fayetteville, an honors College Scholar, graduated cum laude with a bachelor of science degree.

Mercer University

Early Villegas of Rogers was awarded a master of science degree from Penfield College of Mercer University in Georgia during the 2016 commencement ceremony in May.

Baldwin Wallace University

Kaitlin Burgess of Bentonville, a graduate of Silver Lake Regional High School Kingston, was graduated from Baldwin Wallace University in Berea, Ohio, with a bachelor of arts in athletic training and exercise science.

The New School

Two middle school students at The New School in Fayetteville, Cammie Parker and Storm Skyrme, were chosen as nominees for the 2016 Broadcom Math, Applied Science, Technology and Engineering Rising Stars national middle school science competition. They were invited to apply for the Broadcom MASTERS competition by placing among the top 10 percent of participants at their society-affiliated science fairs.

The top 300 semifinalists will be announced Sept. 6, and the top 30 finalists will be announced later that month.

The 30 finalists each win a trip to Washington, D.C., where they will compete in hands-on science activities for the chance to win trips to STEM summer camps, iPads and monetary prizes up to $25,000.

Elm Tree Elementary

More than 600 students and staff at Elm Tree Elementary School in Bentonville “jumped at the chance” to fight heart disease and stroke.

In May, the school hosted its annual Jump Rope For Heart event, raising $18,658 and ranking No. 1 in Arkansas. In the 37 years of the jump rope program, Elm Tree has raised close to $150,000 for the American Heart Association. Donations raised support lifesaving heart and stroke research, community and education programs.

Students celebrated with a “Glow in the Dark Party,” which included dancing, jump roping and a pie-in-the-face opportunity for physical education teacher Donald Meyers for the top five fundraisers. JRFH teaches students how physical fitness benefits the heart, while demonstrating volunteerism can be a fun and positive experience for the entire community.

The University of Iowa in Iowa City graduated two local students at the close of the spring 2016 semester.

Amanda Pead of Bella Vista received a doctoral degree in speech pathology and audiology. Emma Steinkraus of Fayetteville earned a master of fine arts degree.

James Lilburn of Bentonville graduated from Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colo., graduated during during a spring 2016 commencement ceremony April 30.

He received a bachelor’s degree, with a major in English.

Bryan Nance of Green Forest was named to the 2016 spring president’s list at Drake University in Omaha, Neb., with a gradepoint average of 4.0.

Local students at the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith play leadership roles in the 13th annual Cub Camp to be held Aug. 18-20. These student leaders help coordinate the camp, lead discussion groups and serve as counselors. Hayley Howard of Van Buren, UAFS student, serves as the Cub Camp director.

The event is designed to help incoming freshman acclimate to college life at UAFS by providing opportunities to connect with fellow freshmen, upperclassmen, counselors, faculty, staff and administration. The camp features campus tours, informational skits and discussions on involvement opportunities available to students.
