BENTONVILLE -- Anna Mauromoustakos and Cameryn Cupelli will have another chance to line up side by side as teammates on Fayetteville's girls tennis team next month.
The two rising juniors, however, had to fend for themselves Saturday afternoon at Memorial Park. They made up half the girls' 18 singles field of the Serena Smith State Farm Junior Open state championships, and it was their turn to play each other in the round-robin format.

"It's just a competitive match against each other," Mauromoustakos said. "Then we go back after we're done and be friends again."
Cupelli had the upper hand in Saturday's match because she's more accustomed to playing singles competition. That helped her claim a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Mauromoustakos, who is mainly a doubles player and reached the Class 7A state semifinals in doubles competition last fall.
Cupelli blasted a forehand winner to break Mauromoustakos' serve and take an early 3-1 lead in the first set, only to lose that edge in the following set. But that didn't matter as Cupelli turned up her game a notch and captured the next nine sets to pull off the sweep.
"I have played singles all year," Cupelli said. "I haven't played much in doubles much, and I really like singles.
"I haven't played a lot against Anna in singles. Doubles is different, so I wasn't quite sure how to approach it. I just knew I had to go out and take good shots and play to the best of my ability."
The win also made Cupelli the likely winner in that age division. She took a 6-3, 6-2 victory Friday over Avery Hargrove, who was on Bentonville's state runnerup doubles team last season, and her scheduled opponent for today -- Allison Burgess of Lafayette, La. -- withdrew from two previous matches.
The two players soon will turn their attention to their upcoming season at Fayetteville, and Cupelli expects to be playing in singles matches again this fall. Meanwhile, Mauromoustakos likely will return to doubles competition, but she has to find another partner since last year's teammate, Cameron Churchill, graduated.
"We have a new freshman coming up," said Mauromoustakos, who will play Hargrove in a match this morning to determine second place in their age group. "There's a chance that we might get to play doubles together, but I'm not positive."
