2,540 in Arkansas to get at least $5,100 in VW emissions offer

The Arkansas owners of some 2,540 Volkswagens will receive at least $5,100 each and other benefits as part of the automaker's agreement to spend nearly $15 billion to settle claims by U.S. regulators that software on certain Volkswagen models was modified to deceive emissions tests, according to the state attorney general's office.

The U.S. said Volkswagen violated laws against deceptive and unfair trade practices when it installed emissions software that made its diesel-fuel vehicles appear to meet federal emissions standards when they did not.

The settlement is still subject to a judge's approval. A hearing is set for July 26 in San Francisco.

The 2,540 vehicles in Arkansas covered under the settlement involve those that were leased or bought. Owners, in addition to the minimum payment of $5,100 and maximum of $10,000, will choose between a buyback of the vehicle based on pre-scandal National Automobile Dealers Association value or a modification to reduce emissions.

Volkswagen will notify those who are eligible. More information is available at vwcourtsettlement.com.
