Two Springdale men were arrested Wednesday after a man told police they followed him on the Lake Fayetteville trail near Veterans Memorial Park before grabbing him, taking his wallet and phone and throwing him to the ground, according to a preliminary report from the Fayetteville Police Department.

Luis Martinez, 22, and Ivan Martinez, 18, both of 1305 Crutcher St. in Springdale, were arrested in connection with robbery, theft of property and false imprisonment.

Chance Smith told police he was walking near the Lake Fayetteville dam and Veterans Park when he noticed the men following him. Eventually, Ivan Martinez ran up to Smith and wrapped his arms around him, according to the report.

Luis Martinez asked Smith if spoke Spanish, then took his wallet — with debit cards and about $100 in cash — and his cell phone, the report stated. Smith said the men seemed to unsure what to do with him after they took the items, and threw him on the south side of the trail before they fled east on the trail.

An officer found Luis and Ivan Martinez, who matched Smith's description, near the Botanical Garden of the Ozarks, according to the reporte.

Luis Martinez had $162 cash in his pocket, according to the report. Police were unable to find Smith's wallet or phone, the report stated.

Luis and Ivan Martinez were released Thursday from the Washington County Detention Center on $3,500 bond each.
