Snavely’s effort fit for a king

SILOAM SPRINGS -- Kyle Snavely crowned homecoming queen Abby Cox, kissed her on the forehead and then went and played the best game of his career Friday.

The Siloam Springs' 6-foot-7 senior captain scored a career-high 30 points as the Panthers handed Bryant its first 7A/6A-Central Conference loss, 70-58, at Panther Activity Center.

"Snavely came in and gave us what we needed," said Siloam Springs head coach Tim Stewart. "It goes to show you about his work ethic and determination. He was the difference in the game."

The Panthers (13-5, 5-1) led 28-25 at halftime after Caleb Lampton beat the buzzer with a layup.

Snavely, who had 11 points in the first half, put the team on his shoulders in the third quarter, scoring 15 of the Panthers' 17 points.

"He was awesome," Bryant coach Mike Abrahamson said of Snavely. "We didn't have an answer for him. We just got beat by a good team and Snavely. We couldn't stop him."

Snavely's hook shot that went for a three-point play gave Siloam Springs a 45-38 lead at the end of the third quarter. He picked up his fourth foul in the fourth quarter and had to go to the bench with 26 points.

But in his absence, his teammates picked up the scoring slack. Noah Karp scored five straight, Kyle Comiskey hit a 3-pointer and Jordan Norberg scored six of his 11 as the Panthers extended their lead to 14 points.

Snavely re-entered the game and scored twice more as the Panthers pulled ahead by 15 before emptying their bench.

"We play as a team and it's always good to win on homecoming," Snavely said. "They're a good team. They're probably one of the best teams we've played."

The Hornets (15-4, 5-1) played most of the second half without Kevin Hunt, who left the game with a hip flexor injury, briefly returned before leaving again after re-injuring it. Hunt finished with 12 points for Bryant, while Romen Martin had 19.

"It took the wind out of our sails," Abrahamson said. "The rest of the team looks up to Kevin and relies on him. We ask a lot out of him."

Morgan Vaughn hit a 3-pointer in overtime and Alexis Duffy made four free throws as the Lady Panthers pulled out a homecoming victory.
