Audubon plans pair of trips

Northwest Arkansas Audubon Society will host field trips on Feb. 6 at the Eagle Watch Nature Trail at Swepco Lake near Gentry and on Feb. 13 at Devil's Den State Park.

For the Feb. 6 outing, meet at the trail parking area at 9 a.m. The parking area is two miles west of Gentry on Arkansas 12.

The trip is a short walk through a meadow and woods to a viewing platform on the lake shore. There is potential to see bald eagles, various species of hawks, sparrows, waterfowl and other birds.

Trip leaders are Terry Stanfill, caretaker of the trail and property, and Joe Neal, an expert on birds. Stanfill will have free packages of milkweed seed for anyone interested in growing milkweed to benefit monarch butterflies and other pollinators.

A trip to nearby Round Prairie is planned after the trail hike.

The Feb. 13 field trip at Devil's Den State Park is part of the national Great Backyard Bird Count. Meet at 9 a.m. in the lower Devil's Den Trail parking area on the south side of the Lee Creek bridge. The trip will last two hours. It involves slow, easy walking and lots of listening for birds. Trip leader is Joe Neal.

The park has a full day of activities planned to celebrate birds.

Anyone interested in birds is welcome. Audubon membership is not required.
