Police: Man threatened shooting at Fayetteville VA

FAYETTEVILLE — Law enforcement was on high alert and the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Fayetteville limited access to its facility after a man threatened to shoot people Wednesday morning, Fayetteville Police Department Sgt. Craig Stout said.

Stout referred questions about the incident to the hospital police and Arkansas State Police.

The man was caught by Arkansas State Police around 11 a.m. Tuesday outside of Alpena in Boone County without incident, according to a Fayetteville dispatch report. The man was taken to a medical center for evaluation, according to state police in Boone County.

Hospital police called Fayetteville police at 10:18 a.m. Wednesday and asked for help watching out for a man who threatened "to take out as many people as possible and that the blood would be on his wife’s hands," according to the report.

The man left Harrison around 9:39 a.m., according to the report. He had said he wanted to kill himself and was possibly having a psychosis event, according to the dispatch report.

The Fayetteville hospital closed roads to the hospital, leaving open only Memorial Drive, according to the dispatch report. The veterans affairs hospital in Branson, Mo., and Washington Regional Medical Center in Fayetteville were also told to look out for the man, according to the report.

Law enforcement tracked the man via his cellphone, according to the report. He was pulled over by Arkansas State Police by 11 a.m. Wednesday, according to the report.

A hospital spokesman did not return a message and email left Wednesday.

Arkansas State Police spokesman Bill Sadler referred questions to the Boone County sheriff’s office. He said in email he would not confirm any information.

A message left for the Boone County sheriff was not returned Wednesday.

No further information was available Wednesday.
