I-49 work to require overnight closure of adjacent highway

Construction work on Interstate 49 in Springdale will require overnight lane closures on U.S. 412, according to Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department officials.

The contractor will be installing a safety platform and removing a section of the bridge decks to accommodate the widening of I-49. Eastbound and westbound lanes of U.S. 412, also known as West Sunset Avenue, will alternately be reduced to one lane between the east and west I-49 access ramp intersections. Traffic on I-49 will not be affected.

The lane closures are set to occur nightly between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m., beginning Monday night and ending Friday morning, weather permitting. Traffic will be controlled using flaggers and barrels.

This project is part of the department’s Connecting Arkansas Program and includes widening 4.5 miles of I-49 to three lanes in each direction. The work extends from Johnson to U.S. 412 in Springdale. The project is anticipated to be complete in early 2017. More information on the $28.3 million project is available at ConnectingArkansasProgram.com.
