School bus wrecks; no serious injuries

A bus transporting members of the Strong boys basketball team veered into a ditch Wednesday afternoon after the driver was forced to maneuver around a portion of a timber-truck trailer.

Arkansas State Police said the bus was carrying 18 passengers. Saul Lusk, superintendent of the Strong-Huttig School District, said passengers were taken to Medical Center of South Arkansas in El Dorado, but there were no major injuries.

The bus was en route to Hampton, where the team was scheduled to compete in a basketball tournament.

Lusk said the bus veered off U.S. 82 not far from the Urbana crossroads in Union County.

"It occurred somewhere in that area. I'm not sure of the exact location," Lusk said. "Part of a trailer from a timber truck came off. The driver had to take immediate action, and the bus landed in a ditch on the side of the road.

"They are blessed that it wasn't worse than what it was," Lusk said. "We're thankful that everybody is OK."
