Mustangs, down 9 early, blitz Blazers

JONESBORO -- Forrest City dominated the second and third quarters Tuesday night against Valley View, turning a nine-point deficit into a 24-point lead en route to an 84-70 5A-East victory in front of a packed house at the Blazer arena.

The Mustangs (19-3, 11-0) outscored Valley View 27-16 in the second quarter and 31-9 in the third quarter to turn the game around and clinch the conference title.

R.J. Glaspers led Forrest City with 25 points. Trajan Norment and Blayton Williams had 17 each for the Mustangs, who trailed 17-8 after one quarter but led 66-42 after three quarters.

"In a nice little fashion everyone did their little part," Forrest City Coach Dwight Lofton said. "But at the end of the day when Glasper gets to rolling we're a whole lot better, but we played well as a whole team down the stretch."

Valley View (15-8, 8-3) got 24 points from Alexander Gorton, who made five of his team's 11 three-pointers. Adam Horn added 15 points for the Blazers while Matt Owens scored 14.

Valley View scored the game's first 11 points, and led by nine after one quarter.

Forrest City outscored Valley View 10-0 at the outset of the second quarter to turn a 17-8 deficit into a 19-17 lead after a three-pointer by Glasper with 6:29 to play in the first half.

Forrest City built its lead to 26-20 before Valley View fought back though to tie the game 33-33 on a three by Gorton with 50.4 seconds left in the first half. Forrest City leading 35-33 at the half.

A three-pointer by Owens gave Valley View a brief 36-35 lead at the start of the second, but Forrest City outscored Valley View 11-0 to make it 46-36.
